More Harm than Good

  1. Guns are rarely used to kill criminals.

Jeez, what a bloodthirsty savage this asshole is. Why is the value of firearms as tools of self-defense predicated strictly on their use in killing the person who poses a threat of death or great bodily harm? Why isn't deterrence good enough for this beast? DGUs--lifesaving DGUs can and do happen without a shot being fired, but that doesn't count in this violent lunatic's eyes, because the miscreant survives?

And what does Mikeb call it? No surprise there, I suppose.

    1. You're right. He also the all-too-common incidents of shooting at snakes and coyotes.

    2. What, are you pretending to not get the reference to snakes and coyotes? You're a drag, Kurt.

I know that among your innumerable . . . eccentricities is a bizarre fixation on armed self-defense against wildlife, with a particular focus (for some reason) on those two critters--I just don't know what the hell that has to do with this bloodthirsty lunatic's insistence that the only good to be done with firearms is killing people.

      You're a drag, Kurt.

Whatever. At least I'm not a whiny, sniveling little crybaby.

  2. "For every criminal killed in self-defense, 34 innocent people die"

Cool, we get to revisit this claim. Well, first we can always bring up this portion of a study ordered by the President regarding gun violence,

"Defensive use of guns by crime victims is a common occurrence, although the exact number remains disputed (Cook and Ludwig, 1996; Kleck, 2001a). Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million."

And of course, we've discussed quite frequently lately that accidental gun deaths has been declining over the long term. For the most part due to education and safe storage programs run by the NRA and the gun industry.
Fixating on the concept that a defensive gun use doesn't count unless someone dies doesn't seem to get you anywhere. Here is a source listing defensive gun uses, and as you can see, many don't result in death.

    1. In this graphic failed suicides were not considered, nor were those wounded by accident. So why would other than justifiable gun deaths be counted? It's apples and apples.

    2. Mike, you perpetually project onto gun owners this notion of trigger-happy maniacs just itching to kill some criminals and then hide behind SYG/castle doctrine yelling "I feared for my life", yet here you are concluding "guns do more harm than good" because they are not killing enough bad guys. What gives?

That's not supported by official police investigations. You can find a survey that will say anything.

For the most part because States have made safe storage a law with no help from the NRA.

Well, in this case Anon, it came from a study ordered by executive action by our current President. And I'd be interested in reading the official police investigations you mention. Would you possibly have an official source to cite that we could all look over?
And is it all right to quote you the next time you use a survey saying that some large percentage of people want stricter gun laws? It would seem to apply to what you said here,

"You can find a survey that will say anything."
